Open Educational Resources (OER)

"Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge." - Hewlett Foundation

  1. OpenStax – an initiative of Rice University with support from foundations like Hewlett and the Gate’s Foundation (peer reviewed)
  2. SUNY Open Textbooks – an initiative of the State University of New York libraries with support from SUNY grants (peer reviewed)
  3. MIT Open Courseware – openly published MIT course content that covers the humanities, social sciences, and sciences
  4. MERLOT – a project of the California State University System, contains links to open textbooks from a variety of sources (peer review indicators)
  5. College Open Textbooks – a project to drive awareness, adoption, and affordability of open textbooks with a focus on the first 2 years of higher education
