AI and Writingis an introduction to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and its emergent role as a tool for academic, professional, civic, and personal writing. Sid Dobrin examines GenAI from two perspectives: the conceptual and the applied. The conceptual approach addresses the function of GenAI and the ramifications of its use as a writing tool - especially the ethical, social, and material issues it raises. The applied approach offers guidance to assist readers in using GenAI responsibly and authentically. In consideration of the rapid evolution of GenAI and the many unsettled questions about its role, Dobrin leaves room for readers to adapt to shifting technological and institutional conventions. This book is intended for composition and writing-intensive courses, and for any readers with a general or professional interest in the role of GenAI in writing. The Oxford Guide for Writing Tutors by
The Oxford Guide for Writing Tutors introduces two conversations to the tutor's preperation, one about the creation of knowledge in writing programs, the other about tutor research. This approach to tutor training provides several benefits. First, it allows tutors to test their theories of what might work in a writing center session and helps them to move professional conversation towards why such things happen. They bridge the theory-practice divide that often frustrates both novices and experiences tutors. By conducting research to answer such questions, tutors can help themselves, the writers with whom they work, their fellow tutors - and the writers with whom they work. And, further, this approach gives the reader new methods for appreciating and critiquing scholarly work, making it easier to understand the best ways to help writers and to move the field forward.As writing tutoring programs take on a variety of forms and pursue a range of missions, this book aims to create a flexible text whose contents can be easily rearranged to support a broad spectrum of reader needs. Each chapter, accordingly, can be read independently; the text does not rely on a sequential reading to create meaning.The book also includes intra-textual and extra-textual references for the reader who wants to inquire further. That is, throughout the book are references to material in other chapters that might be of interest to the reader intrigued by the topic at hand. So too, in each chapter, we include references to and citations of the scholarship that supports much of the "common knowledge" of the field, including, in the Handbook, both previous tutor education textbooks and research from the field. The aim is to aid the interested reader's inquiry into the scholarship of the field as well as to ground advice about practice in research that testifies to the effectiveness a range of tutoring practices. Much of the scholarship cited throughout the book is authored by undergraduate tutor-researchers as well as several former tutors who were graduate students when they published their articles. This crucial aspect best models the ways in which tutors themselves can bring together practice and research, in their day-to-day work and in their informed thinking about this work. Including tutor voices is an important tradition of the tutor education textbook because these are voices that speak to the issues concerning tutors in a range of institutions and programs across the country.
Writing Centers and the New Racism by

Survey of American College Students 2022 by
The 106-page report looks at how students use their academic advisors, how often and with what result. It also presents data on student evaluation of the overall advising experience and of the experience of online advising sessions. The study also gives specific data on the length of advising sessions, the number of times students have seen their advisors in their college careers and much more. This is a critical resource for academic advising and retention officials in universities and colleges, enabling them to compare their advising efforts with a national representative sample of 1076 full time students from 4-year colleges and universities in the United States.Just a few of the report's many findings are that: ? 8.92% of students could not identify their academic advisor.? Male students see their advisors considerably more often than do female students.? 52% of students with a full time job have ever taken an online advising session.? By school size, students at the smallest colleges had the longest academic advising sessions, those at the largest colleges, the shortest.? Students studying education or library science were the most likely to think highly of their academic advising experience. Data in the report is broken out by more than 20 personal and institutional variables, so, for example, readers can get specific data on student evaluations of the quality of advising for first year students vs. sophomores, juniors or seniors, or for students in level 1 research universities vs. doctoral institutions, or for male vs. female or vs. transgender students, or for business/economics majors vs fine arts majors, etc., etc. Breakouts include personal variables such as age, year of school standing, major or intended major, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income level, SAT/ACT scores, college grades, regional origins, race/ethnicity, as well as institutional variables such as level of school tuition, size of school of institution attended and many other variables.

This volume addresses the gap in knowledge around generative AI and its applications in education. It draws on the recent history of technological innovation and digital pedagogies, locating generative AI in the contemporary discourse around education futures. It argues that a new hybrid model of education is emerging, requiring educational institutions to embed generative AI into course and programme design, delivery and assessment.
