​                                                                                                                                 The Virginia Readers' Choice Award (formerly The Virginia Young Readers' Award) is sponsored by  The Virginia State Literacy Association (formerly The Virginia State Reading Association) in association with The Virginia Association of School Librarians, The Virginia Library Association and the Library of Virginia Youth Services. The first award was given in 1982. Beginning in 1986, awards were given to honor books on three levels. The purpose of the award is to encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal, to broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure, to encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure, and to honor favorite books and their authors. Winners are announced annually in late spring. Listed below is a comprehensive list of the award winning books.

Triple Crown Awards

In 1992 Sandra Morrow, the librarian at Brentwood Christian School in Texas, established the Children’s Crown Award.  The purpose of the Triple Crown Awards is to encourage elementary and middle school students to read wholesome and uplifting books with edifying themes that inspire children toward positive goals. Books are selected annually.  There are three awards based on age categories: The Gallery Award(grades 1-3), The Crown Award(grades 4-5), and The Lamplighter Award(grades 6-8). The National Christian School Association and Harding University administer the awards.

The Cardinal Cup Award (formerly known as The Jefferson Cup Award) was established in 1982 to honor a distinguished biography, historical fiction, or American history book for young people. The Jefferson Cup Committee’s goal is to promote reading about America’s past; to encourage the quality writing of United States history, biography and historical fiction for young people, and to recognize authors in these disciplines. From 2012-2021 two books were selected: one for geared toward young adult readers and one for young readers. Beginning in 2022, the Committee returned to the original model, honoring the most distinguished biography, historical fiction, or American history book for young people.
